Police ward off a firebomb in central Athens

Riot police use their shields to protect themselves against an exploding Molotov cocktail in central Athens yesterday. The attack was one of few to mar the annual protest march commemorating a 1973 student uprising at the Athens Polytechnic, bloodily suppressed by the military dictatorship. Thousands joined yesterday’s rally, despite heavy rain, but there was little violence, with just a handful of self-styled anarchists clashing with police outside the US Embassy.
