A student…

A student from Ioannina protests in front of the Stavrakio Prison in northwestern Greece yesterday, as inmates at all of Greece’s jails decided to end a two-week hunger strike aimed at improving detention conditions. The prisoners took the decision after the government submitted a draft law to Parliament this week, which it said would lead to more than 5,000 inmates being released by April next year. Justice Minister Sotiris Hatzigakis said yesterday that, to avoid overcrowding, he is examining the possibility of forcing petty criminals to wear tracking devices rather than being sent to prison.
