Cost of 2,100 rooms available for 2004

Olympic organizers yesterday gave potential visitors an idea of how much hotel accommodation will cost during the 2004 Games – if rooms can be found. The average price of a luxury hotel room in Athens in August 2004 will be 480 euros, according to Spyros Kapralos, executive director of the 2004 Organizing Committee. The next highest category room will cost around 250 euros and then down to an average of 175 euros at the next level, he said. All rates include breakfast and taxes. But a good room anywhere in the city may be hard to find. About 90 percent of Athens’s 21,000 top-quality rooms will be reserved for International Olympic Committee officials and guests. Many spectators will have to seek lodging in private residences or far away from Athens. He added that a bill seeking 30 million euros to upgrade lower-class hotels will be presented soon. (AP)
