Force winds and heavy rain…

An Athenian is drenched by a crashing wave as he walks in the city’s coastal suburbs on Saturday. Gale force winds and heavy rain wreaked havoc with ferry travel and caused flooding in some parts of the country. The fire service had to respond to 56 calls for help in Attica, 86 in central Greece and almost 100 in the Peloponnese. One of the areas worst affected by floods was Ierapetra on Crete, where a driver narrowly avoided being swept out to sea in his car. Nine fire engines were dispatched to this area of southeastern Crete to help locals recover from the damage caused by flooding.
