Old essay back to haunt tutor

A teacher from the island of Serifos is facing the possibility of being sacked from his job because of an article he wrote in an education magazine 19 years ago, in which he suggested that student parades were outdated. Kathimerini has learned that the article was read some 10 years ago by a retired army officer who reported the teacher, Christophoros Papaioannou, to the Education Ministry. The ministry is now investigating whether Papaioannou, 51, displayed in his article a «refusal to recognize the Constitution and a lack of devotion to the homeland and democracy,» which is an offense that he can be fired for. It is not clear why the ministry is now probing something published in 1989. «It seems like a hoax,» said the primary school teacher. Local educators as well as the State High School Teachers Federation (OLME) have spoken out in support of Papaioannou, who is hopeful that the matter will be closed without any repercussions for him.
