Students face long arm of the law in Athens

A riot police officer waves his baton at a crowd of youths during a student protest in central Athens yesterday. Thousands joined the rally to protest the government’s plans to recognize private colleges. The protest was marred by violence and police fired tear gas. Two youths were arrested, one for using a sledgehammer to smash the facade of a store on the protest route and the second for vandalizing a police motorcycle.
