Residents of Rhodes had a rude awakening yesterday when a whirlwind swept across the Dodecanese island, causing damage to homes, shops and a sports center in the main town. The mini-tornado, which lasted only a few minutes, struck at about 9.30 a.m. and was accompanied by heavy rain. The Kallipateira sports center bore the brunt of the damage as part of the roof was ripped off the building. The whirlwind also damaged sports equipment and the fencing around the complex. Some shops in the town center also had their windows smashed, while damage to a number of store and road signs was reported. In addition, several areas of Rhodes lost power as a result of the whirlwind but no injuries were reported.
