Greeks welcome China power, survey suggests

More than half of Greeks believe that China’s growing power on the world stage is a positive development, according to a new survey. In a poll carried out by the University of Piraeus with pollsters Kapa Research, almost 53 percent of respondents said they looked favorably on the rise of China while 27.4 percent saw it in a negative light. Greeks also seem to have a positive view of the Chinese community in Greece, estimated to number between 20,000 and 30,000. Of 560 people questioned, 46.6 percent said they have a good opinion and only 10.6 percent a negative one. Last November, President Hu Jintao made an official visit to Greece to finalize a major deal for the management of two container terminals at Piraeus. Four in 10 Greeks appear to think that China will not be affected by the global economic crisis, but 55 percent believe it will suffer.
