Volunteers sought to work resort post offices

Hoping to attract volunteer workers to help ease the workload of postal employees in Greece’s tourist destinations during the high season, the government yesterday announced plans to offer 300 young people a month’s expenses-paid holiday, provided they put in a few hours every day at the local post office. The program, organized by the General Secretariat for Youth (GSY), is open to high school graduates aged 18-30 for July and August. A GSY announcement said volunteers would work «on the Greek islands and in the coutry’s tourist resorts.» Volunteers will have their travel, accommodation and living expenses paid. Applications can be submitted this Friday through Wednesday, June 19, at the GSY head offices at 417 Acharnon Street, Athens, or faxed to 010.259.9433 and 010.259.9471. For further information, call 010.259.9431-5. The struggle for protection of the environment should not be limited to the general level described above. Everyday struggle at the individual level is of fundamental importance as well. This war can only be won by cultivating the ecological conscience of young people and the sensitivity of adults. School has an essential mission to perform, as does the media. Environmental degradation will only be brought to a halt if we overcome our carelessness and mindless individualism.
