Ex-mayor jailed for Maroussi retail center

The former mayor of Maroussi, Panayiotis Tzanikos, was yesterday handed a 12-month jail sentence by an appeals court in connection to the building of The Mall, the shopping center next to the Olympic Stadium. The Council of State has deemed its construction, as well as the ministerial decision that paved the way, illegal. Tzanikos failed to convince the appeals court that The Mall had been a benefit to Maroussi and had not caused environmental damage to the area. The appeal judges also rejected Tzanikos’s appeal for a more lenient sentence based on his previous good record. Another five people are due to be tried in connection to the construction of The Mall, Greece’s biggest shopping center. A court is due to hear on April 30 a suit filed by residents claiming 600 million euros in compensation to the Municipality of Maroussi from the construction firm.
