‘Going green can create jobs’

At a time when thousands of jobs are being lost in Greece each month, environmentalists believe that the country could create more than 150,000 employment opportunities by investing in environmentally friendly projects. Greenpeace representatives presented a report yesterday that they said shows how between 98,500 and 155,000 jobs could be directly created by 2020. «For every position created, another 1.6 jobs would be indirectly established,» said Greenpeace’s Stelios Psomas, an adviser on energy and environmental issues. «The total benefit from green activity would lead to 256,000 to 403,500 positions being created.» He added that areas where people could be employed include expanding renewable energy sources, recycling and organic farming. «The report, using numbers and well-thought-out arguments, shows that a move toward green technologies could improve the employment situation,» said Greenpeace’s Dimitris Ibrahim.
