Gazi Square to be completed
Work to complete Gazi Square, in one of Athens’s most popular nightspots, has begun and should be completed this summer, metro officials said yesterday. Commuters, clubbers and those who have headed to Gazi for a coffee in the sunshine over the last two years since the Kerameikos metro station opened may have noticed that part of the square has been taken up by the shipping containers belonging to Attiko Metro, the company that runs the subway system. In fact, the containers covered a third of the 1.2-hectare square and were the first thing one saw when exiting the metro station. The containers now have been removed and bulldozers are moving in to construct a small open-air theater. Attiko Metro officials said there had been pressure from the owners of the surrounding bars, cafeterias and restaurants to allow them to place tables and chairs on the new section of the square.
