What’s brown, smelly and flows from taps?

Residents of Oinofyta, north of Attica, where tests on water have revealed high traces of the toxic chemical hexavalent chromium, are complaining of brown, smelly water running from their taps despite government assurances that their water supply would be purified, Skai has learned. Many locals have told Skai that they do not have enough clean water for cooking and personal hygiene. Meanwhile local doctors are reporting an increase in the incidence of skin problems. The general secretary of the Environment and Public Works Ministry, Evangelos Baltas, told Skai that it is the responsibility of local authorities to set up a water purification plant in the area. He added that the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) had been told to supply residents of Oinofyta with water from the Mornos reservoir.
