Man shot dead in Exarchia

A 28-year-old electrician was shot dead in front of witnesses in broad daylight in the central Athens neighborhood of Exarchia yesterday in what police believe was a professional hit, possibly linked to drugs. Witnesses told officers that a man on a powerful motorcycle stopped behind the victim as he was about to get on a scooter on the corner of Tsamadou and Tositsa streets at about 2 p.m. The assailant then pulled out a gun and shot the 28-year-old, who was not named, six times. Four of the bullets struck the victim in the head. He died on his way to the hospital. The motorbike used by the gunman was later found abandoned on Ermou Street. The bullets fired are thought to have come from a 9 mm gun. Police sources said the victim had been arrested once in 2000 during disturbances at a concert but opinion was divided on whether he was involved in any illegal activity. Officers familiar with Exarchia suggested that the murder may have been linked to the drugs trade in the area.
