Delta squad officer dies

A member of the police’s recently formed rapid reaction force, who was shot just days after the Delta squad began its operations, died in the hospital yesterday. Spyros Theodorou, 30, had been responding to an emergency call with a colleague in the neighborhood of Kypseli, near central Athens, on April 3 when he was shot in the back of the neck. He underwent two operations after the shooting, but his health deteriorated on Tuesday. Doctors did not reveal the exact cause of his death. «He has the gratitude of all of us for the example he set, for his self-sacrifice and because he represents the entire police force,» said Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Theodorou and his colleague had stopped a suspect in the street when a resident intervened, mistakenly thinking the man was someone she knew. During the confusion, a second suspect, whom the officers had not noticed, shot the 30-year-old. Both suspects escaped.
