Waste plans in doubt due to long delays

The battle to build Attica’s waste treatment plant looks set to move east to Lavrion, as the contractors waiting to build plants in Keratea and Grammatiko are reportedly preparing to withdraw their letters of guarantee from the banks. Sources told Kathimerini that despite assurances from the authorities, the contractors have decided the government is not willing to assume the political cost of building plants in an area where there is strong opposition. Meanwhile, the European Union has said it will halt funds for waste treatment projects in Attica due to long delays. Keratea Mayor Stavros Iatrou has denied a report that he has met with officials at the Public Power Corporation (PPC) in Lavrion. The PPC has long declared its interest in exploiting the incineration of waste. Lavrion Mayor Dimitris Loukas said he was ready for «major battles» if the plans were to go ahead.
