A plea to protect Greece’s dwindling forests
President Karolos Papoulias (with walking stick) yesterday visited the Valia Calda, the core of the Pindos National Park in northern Greece, with local officials. On a day that saw the year’s first major wildfire ravage a virgin pine forest on the island of Evia and another blaze break out near Nafplion, Papoulias called on authorities to do everything in their power to avert forest fires.
