Fan critical following botched arson attack

A 19-year-old student on the island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, was fighting for his life late last night after sustaining serious burns to his face and body after attempting, shortly before dawn, to torch a local supporters’ association of Athens club Panathinaikos. According to police, the 19-year-old, a student at a local technical college, doused the entrance to the club with gasoline from a large container before setting the fuel alight using a cigarette lighter. Failing to flee in time, the man caught fire and is believed to have burned for several minutes before his cries roused sleeping locals, who came to his aid, extinguishing the flames and calling an ambulance. Doctors at the island’s main hospital said the man’s condition was extremely critical late last night and that his recovery was uncertain.
