FM calls for FYROM shift
Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis yesterday called on authorities in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to approach ongoing United Nations-mediated talks on the Balkan country’s name «with a different logic» after envoys from Athens and Skopje met in Geneva for a new round of negotiations. «They have received the message from all governments of European and NATO countries. I hope they approach these talks with a different political logic,» Bakoyannis said after envoys Adamantios Vassilakis and Zoran Jolevski met with UN special envoy Matthew Nimetz. Meanwhile, FYROM Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski was cautious in his assessment of talks, noting that any proposed name would be put to a referendum. «When a proposal is on the table, our citizens will be able to vote on it in a referendum,» Gruevski said. Nimetz is due to visit Skopje on July 6 and then Athens for follow-up talks with government officials from both sides.
