Rape charge

British barman held on Rhodes for ‘assault’ on teen A 23-year-old Briton, working as a barman in the popular resort of Faliraki on Rhodes, is today to face an investigating magistrate on charges of raping a 17-year-old British girl. According to police, the girl claimed to have been raped by the man after going for a walk with him on a beach near the bar where he worked. Arson attacks Municipal police targeted Unidentified arsonists caused serious damage but no injuries in two gas-canister bomb attacks on municipal police targets in the Athens districts of Papagou and Zografou early yesterday. The first bomb, planted under a municipal police car that had been parked outside the town hall in Papagou, detonated shortly after 4 a.m., destroying the vehicle. The second bomb went off five minutes later outside the ground-floor offices of the municipal police department in Holargos, causing damage to the entrance of the building. There had been no claim of responsibility by late yesterday. Riot rap Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos yesterday described Tuesday’s riots in Grammatiko, northeastern Athens, by local residents protesting the scheduled construction there of a landfill as «entirely unjustifiable.» The minister stressed that certain compromises had to be made if Attica’s garbage problem is to be solved. Prison unrest A senior official of the Justice Ministry was sent to a jail in the Peloponnesian port of Nafplio yesterday after about 200 inmates refused to return to their cells, protesting overcrowding. The inmates demanded to see Justice Minister Nikos Dendias, complaining that 520 of them are crammed into space designed for half that number. After talks with a representative of the inmates, the ministry official said he would convey their concerns to Dendias. Body discovered Police in Argyroupoli, south of Athens, were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man, believed to be aged around 30, whose body was found in a field at the foot of Mount Hymettus. Police suspect criminal activity as the man’s head bore serious wounds. Tractor death A 25-year-old farmer was killed yesterday when the tractor he had been driving near the village of Vasilitsi, in the Peloponnesian prefecture of Messinia, overturned after hitting some rocks. The farmer had been spraying pesticide on his crops when the accident occurred. Emergency landing An army helicopter yesterday was forced to carry out an emergency landing at the military airport at Stefanovikeio, near Volos, in central Greece. The NH-300C aircraft, which had suffered engine failure, landed safely. River rescue National First Aid Center (EKAB) workers yesterday rescued a 63-year-old man who had got stuck in a sandbank in the Axios River, near Thessaloniki, after setting out on a fishing expedition. The 63-year-old was unharmed.
