Athens bus lanes painted red

A pilot program to distinguish the capital’s bus lanes by painting them red is under way, the Athens Urban Transport Organization said yesterday. The program, which is also intended to discourage motorists from clogging up the lanes exclusively reserved for public transport, has already been put into practice on the bus lane on Panepistimiou Street between Eduardou Law and Voukourestiou streets – where buses go against the flow of traffic – and on Ipeirou Street between Tritis Septemvriou and Patission streets. Two bus terminals, on Marni and Stournari streets, have also been recolored. Meanwhile, reports yesterday said Public Works Minister Vasso Papandreou has expressed strong opposition to plans by the Transport Ministry to build raised partitions between bus and ordinary lanes. She observed that these would be dangerous for motorcyclists.
