Stakes raised in dispute over gambling tax

Employees of gaming company OPAP (photo) as well as betting shop owners went on strike yesterday to protest Economy and Finance Minister Yiannis Papathanassiou’s decision to levy a 10 percent tax on sports betting and lottery winnings, removing a tax-free threshold that existed previously. The protesters said that the move would damage their sector and objected to the fact that casino winnings would not be subject to the tax.
