Beaches around Attica, like the one in the southern Athens suburb of Hellenikon seen in this photograph taken yesterday, are expected to be very busy this weekend due to a heat wave. Temperatures are set to rise today to 39 Celsius (102.2 Fahrenheit) in Attica and 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in central Greece. Forecasters expect northerly winds to pick up tomorrow but high humidity levels are likely to counteract their cooling effect. Temperatures are expected to ease off early next week but another heat wave may hit Greece toward the end of the week.
