Donation of girl’s organs saves four lives

The parents of a 13-year-old girl from Ioannina, northwestern Greece, helped save the lives of four people by agreeing to donate their daughter’s organs after she succumbed to a terminal illness on Sunday. Officials revealed yesterday that the young girl’s organs had saved the lives of four people. The teenager’s heart went to a child in Vienna, while her lungs were donated to a 12-year-old boy in Kiel, Germany. One kidney was offered to a 7-year-old girl and the other to a 37-year-old man, both in Greece. The parents’ decision to donate the child’s organs meant that the Hellenic Transplant Organization had to move quickly to ensure that they were delivered in time. «We chose medical teams that could land in Ioannina as soon as possible; the lungs only last for six hours, the heart for eight and the liver for six to eight.»
