‘Black anniversary’…

A Greek-Cypriot soldier stands guard outside a cemetery in Nicosia yesterday during a ceremony to commemorate those who died in the fighting that followed Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus in July 1974. Sirens wailed across the Republic of Cyprus as thousands paid tribute to lost loved ones on what is often called the ‘black anniversary.’ Meanwhile in the island’s Turkish-occupied north, the atmosphere was more upbeat as Turkish Cypriots celebrated the same historical event with parades in the streets and a military aerobatics team performing in the sky.
