Wildfires starts to rise…

Alternate Interior Minister Christos Markoyiannakis (left) met with the chiefs of the country’s fire service yesterday to review the force’s readiness as the number of wildfires starts to rise. Strong winds helped a fire on the island of Evia to spread yesterday. The blaze began in the area of Mandraki and by last night was appoaching the village of Lepoura. Firefighters were also battling a blaze in the Kounopeli area of Ileia in the Peloponnese. Local officials estimated that 25 hectares of farmland and forestland had been burned. More than 50 fires were reported yesterday.
