Award for Democracy…
Valery Giscard d’Estaing speaks during a ceremony in Parliament in Athens yesterday, where he received the Award for Democracy. The former French president, 83, is remembered with fondness here as he was instrumental in helping Greece join what was then the European Economic Community in 1979. He was succeeded as president by Jacques Chirac in 1981.
