Melon and watermelon producers…

Melon and watermelon producers in Trikala prefecture, in central Greece, staged a public protest yesterday to draw attention to their financial problems. The fruit farmers asked for assistance from the state, arguing that the low prices for their produce and some spells of bad weather have left them in dire economic straits. The producers want the government to step in to raise the price at which they can sell fruit and to compensate them for crops that were damaged. Peach producers in northern Greece began a similar protest two weeks ago and yesterday blocked three highways after rejecting the government’s offer.
