Flames at a rubbish dump…

A fireman attempts to put out flames at a rubbish dump in the Nea Zoi area of Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, yesterday. Another blaze broke out in nearby Hasia at around the same time in the afternoon, sending a thick plume of smoke over much of the capital. Authorities were forced to close the Attiki Odos highway briefly due to low visibility. Both fires were brought under control by firefighters. The fire brigade was also called to the area of Keratea, southeast of Athens, yesterday afternoon, but this fire was put out fairly quickly too after burning land with low vegetation. One firefighter was injured when a fire truck tipped over.
