A would-be burglar was shot in the leg by an off-duty police officer after breaking into the latter’s home in Neo Kordelio, Thessaloniki, at lunchtime yesterday. The perpetrator broke into the fourth-floor apartment of the policeman just before 1 p.m. yesterday by forcing open the front door. But the officer, who had been in the property at the time, reacted quickly, grabbing his service gun and shooting the intruder in the leg. The wounded robber then fled out of the apartment block and down the street, pursued by the off-duty officer who caught up with him and cornered him before using his cellphone to call for backup. The hapless burglar was receiving treatment for his leg wound yesterday in hospital under armed guard.
