Man dies after H1N1 infection

A 23-year-old man with serious heart problems has died from complications related to swine flu, the Health Ministry said yesterday. The man had been moved to the intensive-care unit of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center on Friday after being diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. The 23-year-old had been admitted to the hospital earlier this month after suffering a heart attack and had been taking anti-viral drugs. It appears that he contracted the virus inside the hospital. A statement issued by the ministry said the man’s death «could not technically qualify as a swine flu fatality according to international scientific principles as the virus was contracted within the past 48 hours.» The development came just days after the opening of Athens’s first medical center, to be part of a nationwide network used to vaccinate everyone in Greece against H1N1 in the fall. Another six centers are due to open in Athens this month.
