Ex-hoopster held for arms

Michail Misunov, a 45-year-old retired athlete from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, who used to play basketball for Thessaloniki team Aris, was yesterday in detention after officers found two anti-tank grenade launchers in his home. Misunov, who in 2004 was questioned in connection with a ring that used fake credit cards to swindle banks and individuals, is now being linked to a racket believed to be trading in arms and stolen cars. Officers think it possible that the 45-year-old had supplied arms to Vassilis Palaiocostas, the serial robber who escaped from Korydallos Prison by helicopter in February. The alleged link with Palaiocostas was made because a similar grenade launcher had been found at Palaiocostas’s hideout. Police, who raided Misunov’s home after several months of surveillance, also detained two suspected accomplices, aged 29 and 50.
