Police in Thessaloniki yesterday were seeking two gunmen who opened fire on a female traffic police officer with automatic handguns after she tried to stop them fleeing with their loot from a post office robbery. The two robbers had just emerged from a branch of Hellenic Post in the city center at around 1 p.m. yesterday when a passerby alerted a traffic police officer who had been conducting a routine inspection on nearby vehicles. The officer shouted to the pair to give themselves up but instead they started shooting at her. She returned fire, hiding behind a traffic police vehicle to avoid what witnesses described as a «hail» of gunshots, and managed to emerge unscathed. Police were scouring the city for signs of the perpetrators but had failed to find any leads by late yesterday.
