‘Suicidal’ doctor shoots police officer, lawyer

A 52-year-old doctor in Larissa, central Greece, who threatened to shoot himself outside the city’s police headquarters before throwing his gun to the ground – and injuring a policeman and a lawyer in the process – faced a prosecutor yesterday. Witnesses say the doctor emerged from a bar near the police station around 11 p.m. on Thursday night and took a gun out of his car parked nearby. Standing outside the entrance of the building, he reportedly started shouting and swearing, holding the double-barreled shotgun to his neck. A policeman managed to talk round the 52-year-old, who eventually threw down the weapon but the gun went off accidentally, injuring the officer and a lawyer who was emerging from the building. It was unclear if the shotgun shell fired hit either of the victims or they were injured by flying debris but doctors said their injuries were not serious.
