Toy shop not child’s play for robber pair

Two would-be robbers who tried to hold up a branch of the toy retailer Jumbo in the central Athens district of Pangrati on Saturday afternoon, while the store was full of shoppers, fled empty-handed after an employee activated an alarm and police surrounded the building. According to store staff, the gunmen entered the building at around 5.30 p.m. in pursuit of two security firm employees who had been due to collect the store’s takings from the director’s office on the first floor. On discovering that the lock to the director’s office required an access code, one of the would-be robbers hit a security firm employee on the head with the butt of his gun. A store worker who heard the ruckus set off the alarm that brought police to the scene. The would-be robbers are believed to have made their getaway unnoticed by joining a crowd of fleeing shoppers.
