E-crime unit averts 14 youth suicide plans
Officers from Attica police’s electronic crimes unit said yesterday that they had averted the suicides of 14 youngsters aged between 13 and 18 who had uploaded messages in Internet chat rooms over the past three months expressing their intentions to take their own lives. According to police, all the youngsters are Greek, except for one whose nationality was not made known. The young Web surfers all claimed in their online comments to have psychological problems, stemming from unemployment, family problems or romantic disappointment. One youngster, who had been drinking and taking drugs while participating in a chat room, was transferred to hospital immediately after his parents were informed to avert an overdose, police said. In the case of the foreign youth, Greek officers informed Interpol who contacted the child’s parents.
