Soccer’s top two build lead

Fierce rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos ended Round Eight of the soccer Super League in joint top position, after they both notched up 2-1 home victories over the weekend. Olympiakos came back from behind against Ergotelis on Saturday. Striker Costas Mitroglou and midfielder Dudu scored the goals for the Greek champion. Yesterday, Panathinaikos beat PAOK at the Olympic Stadium. Greece midfielder Costas Katsouranis scored both goals for the Greens. PAOK had leveled through Vieirinha before having Vladimir Ivic sent off late in the game. The two perennial giants of Greek soccer are nine points clear of third-placed team Aris, which drew 1-1 with AEK in Thessaloniki yesterday. In the weekend’s other games: Levadiakos beat Iraklis 1-0, bottom side Panthrakikos lost 3-1 at home to Larissa, Xanthi beat Kavala 2-1, Asteras Tripolis lost 2-1 at home to Atromitos and Panionios beat PAS Yiannina 3-1 in Athens.
