Search continues for man missing in flood

The search for a 46-year-old man who went missing on Sunday in Pieria, northern Greece, when a storm hit the area, was to continue today, as rescue workers had failed to find him by nightfall yesterday. Members of the fire service, police teams and volunteers are expected to converge at first light to resume their search for the father of three whose car was found in the Aisonas River on Sunday. Storms that hit much of northern and southern Greece over the weekend are believed to have damaged some 500 hectares of farmland, according to initial estimates. Deputy Agricultural Development and Food Minister Michalis Karchimakis said state inspectors would be dispatched to carry out an assessment of the damage so that compensation can be granted. Dozens of basement and ground-floor homes and stores were damaged in the flooding.
