PPC, residents clash over Ambelokipi land

A plot of land in the Athens neighborhood of Ambelokipi has become the focus of a dispute pitching local residents who want a much-needed school built there against the state power company planning the construction of a multistory building. The Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, earlier this year upheld an appeal by residents for the 1-hectare site to be set aside for the creation of a school and a park. But the Public Power Corporation (PPC) now has lodged its own appeal with the same court, contesting a biministerial decision permitting the expropriation of the land for the construction of a school. Nikos Kontos, a municipal councilor, told Kathimerini that residents had been assured by Deputy Environment Minister Yiannis Maniatis that efforts would be made to guarantee the construction of a school without PPC suffering any losses.
