Tempe road problems to go on for a month

Authorities confirmed over the weekend that the Athens-Thessaloniki national road would be closed at the Vale of Tempe for a month following a deadly rockfall there last week. An Italian engineer was killed when hundreds of tons of rock fell onto the road. Although a cleanup operation has begun, it will take crews a few weeks to remove all the rocks and repair the road surface. Three diversions have been set up but there was severe congestion around Larissa due to confusion over which roads trucks should use. The lack of clear signposting also confused many drivers. Officials promised to rectify the problem over the weekend. Anyone traveling between Athens and Thessaloniki by car over the next few days is advised to call 1866 or 2410.741.440 before setting off on their journey.
