Couple jailed for fatal scam

A Greek couple who returned to their native Florina, northern Greece, from their home in Germany in 2003 to stage an insurance policy scam involving the murder of a 46-year-old woman yesterday received long jail sentences. A Thessaloniki court handed down a life sentence and an additional 23-year jail term to the 54-year-old man and a 25-year sentence to his wife, aged 49. The pair were found guilty of applying for two life insurance policies in Germany before returning to their village in Florina where they hatched a plot to cash in on the policies. Basing their plan on a movie, the pair lured a woman to Florina from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with false promises of a job. The court heard that the pair drugged the woman before bundling her into a car which they torched, hoping it would appear like a road accident. Meanwhile the man declared the «disappearance» of his wife in a bid to pocket what would have been a high insurance payout.
