Zakynthos police chief found dead in the sea

The chief of police on Zakynthos whose body was found floating off the island’s southeast coast yesterday with a gunshot wound to the temple is believed to have committed suicide, according to colleagues of the deceased investigating the death. The body of Vassilis Patsouris, 51, was recovered by coast guard officers after passers-by spotted it off the coast of Porto Banana beach in the area of Vasilikos, at around 1.30 p.m. Police said they suspected suicide though they have not ruled out foul play. Coast guard officers were scouring the broader area for signs of the weapon used in the shooting. According to sources, Patsouris had gone to work earlier in the day and had complained of suffering from aching bones over the past week. The 51-year-old was described as being «quiet» and «devoted to the police force.»
