Woman loses kidney in bid not to lose purse

Police in Athens yesterday were seeking the scooter-riding mugger who dragged a 25-year-old woman several meters down a street as she tried to hold onto her purse, causing her serious injuries that resulted in the loss one of her kidneys. The incident occurred in the district of Ilion, western Athens, on Tuesday but was not reported until Thursday when her father went to the police. The woman, employed as a first sergeant in the armed forces, had been walking down down a street on Tuesday afternoon when the assailant pulled up beside her on a scooter and grabbed her purse. Refusing to let go, the woman was dragged along the surface of the road, witnesses said. The 25-year-old was transferred to the hospital with a seriously ruptured left kidney which doctors deemed necessary to remove. She was still in intensive care yesterday.
