Boy dies after jumping off balcony at school

The Education Ministry has ordered an investigation into the death yesterday of a 17-year-old pupil who jumped off the third-floor balcony of a private school in the northern suburbs of Athens. According to witnesses, the teenager arrived at the school in Neo Iraklio at 7.30 a.m., 45 minutes before his first class, and headed up to the third floor where the lesson was to take place. He then emerged onto a balcony adjoining the classroom where he was heard speaking on his cell phone. He suddenly threw the cell phone off the balcony before jumping, witnesses said. The youth was transferred to the hospital but died upon arrival, doctors said. Police were examining the teenager’s cell phone to determine who he had been speaking to before he jumped. The owner of the school told Kathimerini that the boy was «introverted» but «had never caused any problems.»
