Police break up ring of Seikh Sou muggers

The eight suspected members of a robbery ring believed to be behind a string of muggings on couples in the Seikh Sou Forest, on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, were in detention yesterday, police said. The five Albanians and three Greeks are believed to have operated a well-oiled racket over the past few months, threatening couples in their cars into handing over cash and credit cards. Some of the suspected members would hold the couples hostage while others would visit bank ATMs and empty their accounts, police said. Two of the Greek suspects, a 45-year-old man and his 21-year-old son, allegedly supplied the others with guns and ammunition. Officers confiscated four pistols, a single-barrel shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle, ammunition and walkie-talkies. It was unclear how much the ring netted from the eight muggings to which it has been linked since November.
