Dogged farmers to meet minister

Representatives from some 18 roadblocks being maintained at key junctions and border crossings by protesting farmers are today to meet Agriculture Minister Katerina Batzeli for talks aimed at finally reaching some compromise on their financial demands. Farmers from the roadblock at the Promachonas border crossing with Bulgaria reportedly agreed on a common list of demands to be submitted to Batzeli today following a meeting with their counterparts from another blockade at Nikaia in central Greece. Yesterday protesters at Promachonas and Nikaia insisted that they would not remove their tractors from the roads until the government accedes to at least some of their demands for financial assistance to their ailing sector. Farmers at the Promachonas crossing, where protests have caused massive disruption to cross-border trade and transport, have been allowing cars and buses through while hundreds of trucks stand in lines.
