Arrest in police murder case

Police yesterday detained a Ukrainian national in connection with the fatal shooting last April of a 30-year-old police officer in the central district of Kypseli. The detainee, believed to be the brother of the assailant who shot Spyros Theodorou, was caught in a police raid on an apartment in Perama, west of Piraeus. The suspected killer himself had reportedly been returning to the house when police arrived to conduct the raid. He flagged down a car on the road, forced the motorist out and drove off. The police gave chase but he managed to elude them. Theodorou, a member of the police’s rapid-reaction crime-fighting unit known as the Delta Force, was shot on April 3 by a gunman who approached him from behind while he had been questioning a foreign national believed to be acting suspiciously. The incident also resulted in the injury of another officer who had been on duty with Theodorou.
