‘Fresh approach’…

European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki pauses during a press conference at the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels yesterday. Damanaki was lauded by conservationists after proposing that European Union nations should embrace a global ban on fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna by 2011 as stocks are seriously depleted. Greenpeace hailed Damanaki’s ‘fresh approach,’ noting that the survival of the species is at stake. Damanaki said she realized a fishing ban would create ‘short-term sacrifices, but we have to accept them.’
