Fireman stages symbolic protest in capital
A fireman protesting austerity measures that reduce his benefits lights a flare in front of police outside Parliament yesterday. Later in the day around 5,000 civil servants marched through the capital to protest wage and benefit cuts. Meanwhile lawyers protesting an increase in value-added tax walked off the job in the first of a series of strikes. They are also striking today and Friday. Most state hospitals were operating with emergency staff as doctors joined the action.
