Fake police IDs used to fund cell-phone scam

A 52-year-old escaped convict, believed to have been using 11 forged police identification cards to buy cell phones before selling them for profit, is to face a prosecutor following his arrest in Thessaloniki on Saturday. The fugitive, who has four convictions for forgery carrying a total of six years in jail, was caught at the city’s intercity bus station. Staff alerted police when the suspect insisted on being issued a coach ticket for free after displaying one of his fake ID cards. Officers arrived and searched him, confiscating three cell phone contracts. According to police, these are just some of the contracts the suspect secured using forged ID cards, many with the personal data of court employees. The suspect allegedly sold the cell phones he acquired to stores selling second-hand mobiles in several cities, which he would reach by coach, using his forged ID cards to obtain discounts.
